Preparing for Divorce

Unless it is an emergency, you absolutely should prepare before you file anything with the Court. Sometimes it is advantageous to resolve certain issues or investigate certain matters prior to filing or even telling your spouse.

Make sure you know what assets and debts you have in your name by running a credit check on yourself.

Familiarize yourself with financial accounts. Make copies of statements for your own records and secure them in a safe location.

Inventory your property, including the furniture and personal items in the home. Take pictures or video. Look up the value of your automobiles on the internet. Depending on the circumstances of your particular situation, there may be other things that need to be done before initiating a court proceeding, and you should consult with your attorney to determine this.
